A healthcare assistant who works at the Welland Centre in St Mary’s Hospital, Kettering, is one of just four nominees for the nationwide Patient’s Choice Award.
Paula Lawrence was nominated by patient Yvonne Pywell, who was admitted to the centre at Christmas.
Yvonne said Paula became her “refuge” and was someone to rely upon.
In the citation, Yvonne added: “As a summary, there was no set agenda for Paula to follow. All her actions – the cups of tea, the daily chats, the care, the compassion, the understanding without judging, the ‘going the extra mile’ – she did without expecting recognition or praise.
“Her compassion shone out, and her devotion to patient care went far beyond any job description. She deserves recognition and praise from the highest level for her outstanding ,unselfish work.”
The winner at the awards, which have been organised by the journal Nursing Standard, will be announced at a ceremony on May 9 at London’s Savoy Hotel.
