Captain Crowe back for Leon Barwell match

Former Northampton Town captain Jason Crowe is the latest Northamptonshire sports star to sign up for a charity football match in aid of the Leon Barwell Foundation at Sixfields.

It is hoped the game in April will raise thousands for the foundation, which has been set up by the Barwell family in memory of the former Saints chairman, who died in June 2013, aged 46, following a battle with cancer.

The inaugural Leon Barwell Foundation Trophy match will see two teams of legends from the Northamptonshire sport scene – plus a number of special guests –

appear at the home of the Cobblers on Sunday, April 12, 2015, with kick-off at 3pm.

Crowe joins the likes of fellow ex-Cobblers defenders Ian Sampson and Ray Warburton in the line-up while, former Saints stars Matt Dawson and Martin Bayfield, and ex-Northants and England cricketer Devon Malcolm, are also in the squads for the match.

A versatile defender, Crowe joined Northampton Town in 2005 and played an integral part in their promotion to League One that season, forming part of a record-breaking defence that kept 25 clean sheets during the 2005/06 campaign.

Crowe remained at Sixfields until 2009, when he moved to Leeds United following the Cobblers’ relegation to League Two.

The rampaging full-back, who started out at Arsenal, returned for a short second spell at Sixfields during the 2011/12 season, before moving to Corby Town to play under former team-mate Sampson.

Crowe said: ““I love Northampton, it’s in my blood,

and I’m definitely looking forward to playing at Sixfields again.”
