Young entrepreneurs in Wellingborough can have a go at being a market trader for free.
Wellingborough Council is offering a free stall to traders aged between 16 and 21 at a special youth market on Saturday, May 17, held as part of the national Love Your Local Market campaign.
Love Your Local Market, which runs from May 14 to 28, started two years ago to celebrate and highlight the importance of markets to the community and the local economy.
The campaign is led by the National Association of British Market Authorities and supported by the government, and previous years have seen thousands of events taking place up and down the country.
The campaign this year is looking to establish 100 youth markets in different locations, with Wellingborough’s market being one of them.
Steve Dunkley, from Wellingborough Norse, said: “Market trading is great way to test out a business idea, and also for online businesses to meet customers face-to-face.
“Young people often have innovative ideas for a business, service or product, but may not know what to do next or how to find their potential customers.
“That’s why we hope a youth market, with free stalls, will help these young entrepreneurs start out.
“Alan Sugar and Marks and Spencer started incredibly successful businesses from market stalls, and we want to make it as easy as possible for people in Wellingborough, and especially our young people, to give it a go too.
“We’ve seen an increase in trader numbers over the past few months, but we’re still looking for more to join us to help the market thrive.
“We’re very proud of our history as a market town, and we want to do what we can to keep that going.
“We’re hoping that taking part in the national Love Your Local Market campaign will bring us more traders and, most importantly, more shoppers.”
The free stalls for young people are 6ft x 3ft, covered, and have lighting and electricity.
People can also apply to be a casual or permanent trader on other market days, with stall rates starting from as little as £10.
