A man is wanted in connection with an aggravated distraction burglary on an 80-year-old woman.

Between 9pm and 10pm on Friday, July 13, the offender knocked on the door of the woman’s home in Pennycress Place on the Ecton Brook estate in east Northampton.

The man told the woman he was from Anglian Water and that he needed to check her water supply. He was wearing what appeared to be an official jacket and the woman let him onto the property.

While the woman checked the taps, the man searched the property but became angry when he couldn’t find her handbag.

The man then assaulted the woman nefore finding her purse. He placed the money in his pocket and left the property, locking the woman into her home.

The offender was white, in his 40s. He had a beard and a moustache but not a lot of hair, which was light brown, pushed back in the middle, with short sides that went over his ears.

He is about 5ft 10ins, of slim build, with pale blue eyes. He was wearing a navy waterproof jacket with the hood up and this had a yellow Anglian Water logo on its side.

His trousers were the same material and colour and he was wearing a dirty blue old t-shirt and grey slip-on shoes.

A neighbour saw a man park a grey estate vehicle with a sloped back in Pennycress Place. The driver walked off towards the victim’s address and then left around half an hour later. The car screeched away.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire police said: “Householders are reminded never to open their door to someone that they do not know or who they were not expecting.

“Water company officials do not need to access your property in order to check the water supply.

“A genuine caller representing an organisation will always carry identification and will be happy for you to check out the ID.”

Anyone with information can call Northampton CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
