A former lorry driver who was born and bred in Rushden is celebrating his 100th birthday in the town today.

George Danby, who is known to his friends as Bill, enjoyed his birthday at a party with friends at The Beeches care home in Higham Road, Rushden, where he has lived for about a year.

Mr Danby never married and has no living relatives but he has many friends and is very popular at The Beeches.

He has lived in Rushden all his life and attended Newton Road School.

He said: “When I was younger I used to be a Rushden Town supporter and I always enjoyed socialising and my job as a lorry driver.

“I also quite liked to have the odd glass of beer.”

Amy Westley, who works as a team leader at the care home, said: “Bill is an absolute pleasure to have here and we all love him to bits.

“He’s a Jehovah’s Witness and doesn’t really celebrate birthdays but with this being a special occasion he agreed to having his picture in the newspaper – he said it would make him a local celebrity.”
