Augean opens up Kings Cliffe waste site

Augean will be opening the gates of its East Northants Resource Management Facility site in Kings Cliffe for people to see the different aspects of site operations at the annual open day.

The principal theme of the open day will be how the site is monitored, by Augean under the conditions of the Environmental Permits that are needed to operate the hazardous landfill site, and also by the Environment Agency which regulates the site.

There will be an opportunity to examine and discuss the monitoring data with Augean staff, as well as to see how the data is collected and analysed in the on-site laboratory by the team of technicians and chemists.

Augean group technical director Dr Gene Wilson said: “Augean attach great importance to monitoring as it represents a vital part of our responsibility towards the environment and the health of the local community.

“The open day gives an opportunity for residents in the area to gain an insight into how the landfill is operated and monitored.

“Augean do recognise that the nature of its business, and the wastes that are managed can be of concern to people living or working in this area. We feel that by visiting the site many local people will feel reassured to know that the site is well managed and fulfils all of the obligations of the permits it operates under, therefore we would like to encourage as many people as possible to come to the open day.”

The Health Protection Agency, which advises Augean on compliance with national radiation safety standards that are required by legislation, will also be present at the open day to answer questions.

One of the consignors of low level radioactive waste, Research Sites Restoration Limited, will also be present to address any concerns.

Access to the documentation and an opportunity to discuss aspects of the planning applications that have been submitted both to the Planning Inspectorate for examination and to Northamptonshire County Council will also be available.

The event will be held from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, July 7.

If any member of the public is unable to come to the open day but is interested in visiting the site at another time Augean would like to invite them to take advantage of the open door policy and arrange a site visit by telephoning the site manager Simon Moyle on 01780 444905.
