A man who led police on a 70mph chase through Kettering has been jailed for 22 months.

Justin Sharp, of Wellingborough, admitted dangerous driving following the incident in February this year when he was stopped in Oak Road, Kettering, in the early hours.

He was jailed when he appeared at Northampton Crown Court on Monday.

The court heard he waited for officers to approach his vehicle before speeding off along Windmill Avenue and Stamford Road at speeds of 50mph and 70mph before eventually being cornered in a cul de sac.

In interview, Sharp said he panicked as he was taking subutex, an opiate substitute.

Sharp also pleaded guilty to a burglary in Great Doddington, committed while he was on bail for the dangerous driving charge.

The court heard how the occupier of the house was asleep in the afternoon as she worked night shifts.

She was woken by her dog barking and found Sharp in an upstairs bedroom.

The occupier fled the house and alerted a neighbour and Sharp was soon arrested.

Recorder Adrienne Lucking jailed Sharp for six months for dangerous driving and gave him a 16-month consecutive sentence for burglary, for a total of 22 months.

He also got a one-year driving ban.
