The school may have only 61 children on its register and just three full-time teachers, but the youngsters have shown they are top of the class when it comes to sport.

Four children on Woodford Primary School’s table tennis team defied the odds to be placed in the top 12 of schools at a national competition.

This is also despite the fact that two of the team members only starting playing the sport in September last year.

Rachael Gent, Stephanie Daly, Georgia Bland and Jessica Sturdy all competed on behalf of the school at the finals in Blackburn on Saturday, February 25. They were rewarded for their efforts and are now ranked between ninth and 12th in the whole of England for their age group.

Headteacher Arlette Harvey said: “They played some excellent table tennis and never gave up, even when playing girls who had much more experience than them.“

Jessica and Georgia, both aged 10, also impressed local coaches enough to be selected for the Northamptonshire county squad.

The school, in High Street, Woodford, teaches children aged between four and 11.
