A Five Mile Smile and fun day in aid of Niamh’s Next Step has been cancelled because of the poor weather.

The event had been due to take place at the Old Grammarians’ rugby ground in Wellingborough tomorrow (Saturday, April 13), but a waterlogged pitch has made it unusable.

It was due to include a sponsored walk and a host of activities, with Northampton Saints stars Ben Foden and Lee Dickson also planning to attend.

Organisers have promised the event, which was in memory of five-year-old Niamh Curry, who died last May after a battle with neuroblastoma, will take place in the summer.

Niamh’s father Chris said: “We carried out a risk assessment and with all the heavy rainfall we have had, and the pitches being saturated from the last year’s worth of rain, from a health and safety point of view we have had to postpone it.”

He said he hoped a new date, possibly in August or September, could be fixed soon, adding: “It gives us a little bit more time to come back bigger and better.”
